Toastmasters is where most get their start when the awareness sets in that you will need to get in front of people and speak without stressing yourself out.
Your local toastmasters chapter can assist you in developing skills, habits and confidence to speak in front of large groups, small gatherings or infront of just a few co-workers.
Their tips for speakers are invaluable and I loved this article from their website – http://www.toastmasters.org/tips.asp
Get out there and learn by doing and get better by speaking in a safe environment.
As a new speaker it always difficult to book speaking gigs. You don’t have a track record yet and you are looking to build your audience, testimonials and resume.
Some ways I found that really help are to do free speaking engagements in your local area. There are plenty of groups (Rotary, BNI, Clubs, Schools) that are always looking for engaging, well-spoken and topic driven speakers that can address local, national and current information.
Typically these groups look to topics that are relevant to their organization and current in nature or topics that revolve around the “age-old standbys” of time management, organizational skills and increasing efficiency. Humorous messages and anecdotal speaking is another area of interest to these groups; however, you must be extremely well prepared and you’ve tested the content prior to getting in front of a larger organization.
After you build your resume of speaking engagements and have received some excellent testimonies you can then start a more broard approach to gaining ground in the business speaking world that can stem from the connections you made at the groups you spoke at they all usually work at local businesses (banks, manufacturing facilities, small to medium sized businesses).
That will give a large enough base a broad enough resume to expand your services to larger metro areas and network your way to larger companies that may actually pay you for your services depending on your niche topics, past success and favorable word of mouth networking.

I’m excited. I have been doing some speaking at local businesses and now it’s time to get online and go nationwide.
So blogging and social media is the next step. I was talking recently to a few freinds in the speaking industry and they suggested that the social media landscape can create a level playing field when it comes to getting speaking projects. If you have any suggestions or thoughts on that topic please comment!
I also set up my twitter account and I am looking at additional social media channels to promote my speaking business – any ideas on others I should be engaged in?
I specialize in team building and interpersonal communications in a workplace environment. Most of my work has been limited to smaller to medium-sized businesses and I am looking to get the bigger contracts. Also I am going to put some money into online advertising – any ideas on this one too? I have a few options that I am checking out but wow, there are a lot of options and Google ads seem like they can be confusing and expensive.
This is my first post so I do have a lot of questions feel free to comment so I can get feedback from all of the folks online that have “been there and done that”!
